Can You Afford Medical School Tuition?

Can You Afford Medical School Tuition?

It is a valid question.  Medical school is expensive.  Really expensive.  Unless you come from a wealthy family, student loans will be an absolute must.  The average cost for four years of medical school is well into six figures at this point.  Future doctors will be paying off loans well into middle age, possibly longer depending on their level of career success.  Who cares?  Future doctors can afford it.  Well, everybody should care, because these costs trickle down along the entire system.

Why is tuition still high?  Because medical schools do not operate for the good of society.  They are actually (in most cases) tremendous profit centers for universities.  Nobody is arguing that it is cheap to teach medicine to future doctor, but the margins are well in the schools’ (especially those with reputable names) favor at this juncture.  When we take into account that medicine is something everybody in American society will need at some point, it seems odd for tax payers to fund a system that is going to cost them in the long run.

Does this system make sense?  As a society, most people understand that medical costs are rising at a completely unsustainable rate.  It is a popular (and occasionally justified) opinion to often blame doctors for reckless profiteering.  But can anyone really blame them when most young doctors are deep in debt themselves?  Doctors are merely passing their own costs down the system (to a degree).  Another problem is the culture that is being created.  When you enter medical school, from day one (or at least the day of your first bill) you are indoctrinated into a system of paying what the market will bear.  Goodwill is a store for the less privileged – this is a profit-based industry that will not stop until demand is outpaced with supply.  Since demand is near infinite due to a population preferring to staying alive, there is no end in sight.

What are your other options?  First, you can simply refuse to pay it and do something else with your life.  If your dream is to become a doctor, that is not particularly appealing.  Another option is to step outside of the United States.  International medical schools (such as the American University of Antigua in the Caribbean) are often much less expensive and may even run off a US curriculum.  These schools offer the possibility of receiving a legitimate education at a rate that will not break the bank (along with some of the other advantages that study abroad experiences can bring a student).  The downside is that some are more reputable than others and not all translate well to a future career in the United States.  If you do not want to be paying off loans for half your life, this may be an option to look at – but make sure to do your homework before selecting a specific institution.

I have meandered across a few different points in this article – from asking why tuition is so high to pointing out the negative effects on overall society that high tuition poses to presenting other options for individuals who cannot afford these costs.  This wandering is not unlike the cluster mess of the healthcare system currently in place.

Lake Travis High School Wins State Football Championship; Exemplary Rating for LTISD Schools

Texas Hill Country living just ain’t right without Friday night lights.  High school football in Texas is big.  Bigger than big, in fact.  It is a way of life.

The Lake Travis Cavaliers have just won their fourth straight Texas football championship.  This is a record that will stand long and stand hard.

Lake Travis, class 4A, is one of only three teams to ever run the hat trick plus one.  Only Sealy (94-97) and Celina (98-01) have ever accomplished this feat.  Lake Travis did this despite adversity and injuries.  Can they do it again next year, and be the only 4A team to ever win 5 state championships in a row?  Well, that remains to be seen, however with the support of the community and parents, this team may just have a shot at that.

Lake Travis Independent School District is located just outside of Austin in the Texas Hill Country, near Mansfield Dam.  It is just west of the Eanes ISD (known as Westlake), off 2244 and 620.  Some say that those who can’t go to Westlake go to Lake Travis.  I think Lake Travis might have something to say about that.

The Lake Travis ISD is rated as an “exemplary” school district by the Texas Education Agency.  Specifically, the five feeder elementary schools, two middle schools, and the one and only high school rank high on the list for not only graduation rates (zero to low dropout rates), as well as college attendance.  Lake Travis ISD pupils are simply expected to go to college – there is no other option.  And that is one thing that makes this school district stand out.

The involvement of the parents and the community is tantamount to the success of the “kids”.  Success in the LTISD not only encompasses football, but other sports such as women’s volleyball as well.  Of course, the true measure of success in any forum of academia is the future higher education and success of the students.  Lake Travis ISD prepares its students for the best colleges, in both the state, nation, and abroad.

Living in the Texas Hill Country amongst the Lake Travis Cavaliers, one cannot help but note that success is all but guaranteed for the students.  What a great place this is to live and grow!

Advantages And Inconveniences Of Distance Learning. Choosing The Right School

Advantages And Inconveniences Of Distance Learning. Choosing The Right School

The advantages of distance learning are clear: by becoming a distance learner, the candidate can continue his professional activity, take care of his or her child(en) or pursue multiple diplomas simultaneously. In fact, it is not uncommon for some students go to college and simultaneously work towards another diploma via distance learning.

Finally, the advantage for some is that you will be able to follow the curriculum that interests you without having to move to the other end of the Earth.

Words of caution though; consider the main constraint of this system: you are alone. No professor will be available to give you a written or oral demonstration. Of course, most of the schools proposing distance learning courses supply you with the telephone and email contacts with your professors, but it will never replace the face to face interaction. Often it is difficult to motivate yourself, looking at your homework after a long day at work. Motivation and discipline are therefore essential if you wish to succeed. Another element to take in consideration is of course the price! The private schools are often costly… And once the paid, impossible curriculum to go back!

Why choose distance learning?

Candidates going after a distance learning education may be:

- Salaried persons
- Imprisoned persons
- Employees wishing to evolve
- Job seekers
- Handicapped persons
- Persons living abroad

The main reasons to justify distance learning are to obtain additional skills, get a professional specialization or finish a diploma. Employees are more and more interested in distance learning that allows them to advance professionally, thanks to their newly learned skills. Students, employed or not, isolated or on a budget, who are unable to follow a standard curriculum, use the distance learning.

Qualities required

Seriousness, self-discipline and motivation are essentials! No one will be behind you to push you if you are not consistent or if you fail to follow through on your work. You must learn to manage everything alone. Choosing distance learning is to subscribe to a moral and financial agreement… In any case, distance learning can be a solution for those that are not able or do not wish to follow classical teaching.

What solutions are available?

Distance learning programs have huge variations. Public and charter schools are free but aren’t available everywhere. Programs are occasionally unreliable and accessible only to students living in certain cities. Some private programs offer better quality at a high price tag.

The public distance learning programs

Most states offer distance learning programs. They are often free or inexpensive. Nearly all public distance learning programs meet state and national school requirements and are regionally accredited. Charter schools are also free but you must investigate their track record and getting in may not be easy.

The private distance learning programs

A large number of private and public distance learning schools are available. You should trust word of mouth and look into their reputation. Take the time to be fully informed. If possible make an appointment, contact the educational director and the former students if possible. Private schools are more expensive but good ones can deliver excellent results.

How to choose the right school?

Because educational support is essential, regardless of curriculum, make sure you get the most information on the teachers with whom you will be in contact. How easy is it to contact them? By which means should you contact them?

At last, concerning the cost of your curriculum, review the options proposed by the chosen school. Are manuals part of the price? Multimedia courses that are often pricier: Are they worth really the cost?

Is your Internet connection fast enough to follow the online video courses? If you choose a class using mail, think about your postage stamp budget!

The content and the organization can vary from one university to another. Normally, it is not necessary to live nearby a school to be able to register. Nevertheless you may have to attend specific locations for some exams.

Thanks to distance learning, you can educate yourself, when you want and from where you want. Taken on seriously, this can be a great way to obtain the training and diplomas that will step up your professional future.
